Ron – AA4VK ( VK9NN) and Will – AA4NC (VK9NR) made stop on Norfolk Island during their Pacific islands tour to make inspection of my (VK9NK) setup.
Because my Spiderbeam is not very high I lose signals coming with low angles. I mounted new vertical for 20m. It will allow not only low angles but also long path to Europe. So, if you are in Spain, Great Britain or Portugal you can choose short or long path.
Today I rebuilt antenna set-up. 160m is no more on the air. The same mast is now used for 80m. Measurements show good SWR on FT8 part of the band. Please notice that I will use Fox/Hound mode on 3569 kHz.
Probably I will make attempt for little SSB operation around 3605 as SWR there is acceptable.
Mostly I will be on 80m about 11:00 – 13:00 UTC and 18:00 – 19:30 UTC.
I had antenna exercise. During my work 160m antenna current melted plastic cord carrier and all wire went to ground at night. Strange , but SWR showed 1:1.2 and I operated of course without succes. It was in the night and I dicscovered damage in the next morning.
By the way of fixing 160m I changed configuration of 30/40m. Now I have single vertical for this both bands.
- LEARN how to use Fox/Hound mode. When pile-up is bigger I change to F/H mode.
- NEVER call me on my transmit frequency.
- Probably it is better to call me in normal mode from 2500 – 3500 Hz . There is not so much QRM on that part of the band and I use wide filter.
I will participate in WPX RTTY Contest during weekend 8-9 February . If you need Norfolk Island on RTTY please call me.
My 160m antenna tunes on 6m with SWR 1:1.9. Today I made few ZL and VK contacts on 6m. Waiting for more….
Maybe I should make dedicated 6m antenna?
As I am operating all amateur bands , there is no much time to check 160m. However I will try to be there about 11-12 UTC and again during my sunrise time – about 18:10 UTC. Maybe not every day but you must be patient and monitor frequency. About 11 UTC I will transmit on 1840 kHz and at sunrise I will try to be on 1836 kHz.
Bad news is that from today there will be no more 30m operation. Good news is that on 30m pole I mounted 160m inverted L and from today I begin FT8 operation on this band.
- Please do not make duplicate contacts. Give a chance to those looking for ATNO!
- Do not call when I am in QSO with other station. Listen more – talk less 🙂
- Please learn how to set-up for Fox/Hound mode. Many stations do not use right settings and waste time making no QSO.
First of all I will try to put up Spiderbeam 20-17-15-12-10m.
Then 2 element vertical for 40m will be mounted.
After about 15 days I will add 160m inverted L antenna and change 40m verticals for similar 30m vertical beam.
After another month or so I will change 160m to 80m inverted L.
Before CQ WW WPX SSB Contest I will change back 30m to 40m vertical beam to make all band effort in the contest.
Those are plans. What real situation will show….We will see….
As a Christmas gift to all deserving HAMs I am preparing new DXpedition to Norfolk Island in 2020. It is my tribute to Jim Smith VK9NS, who lived and operated from there for years. According to last internet poll VK9N is 85th most wanted entity.
